Marmie’s Famous Rolls

1 cup milk
1 package active dry yeast
1/3 cup crisco shortening
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cardamom seed (optional)
1 egg
4 cups flour, in all
vegetable oil

Heat milk to 105-115 degrees. Dissolve yeast in milk. Add shortening, sugar, salt, and cardamom seed. Pour milk mixture over 2 cups of the flour with the egg. Beat mixture hard. Add 1 more cup flour and beat hard. Add 1/2 cup flour and beat mixture hard. Spread mixture in the bowl until flat and spread a little oil over dough. Cover with a cloth and raise in a warm place until doubled, about 2 hours. Pinch off about a golf ball size of dough and knead with a little flour. Place in greased cake pan. Continue until all of the dough is used. Cover rolls with a cloth and let raise until doubled. Bake in 400 degree oven until brown, about 20-25 minutes. Spread a little melted butter over top.
