Maria’s Italian Red Sauce

1 large can whole tomatoes
3 small cans tomato paste
1 medium can tomato sauce
2 lbs. Italian sausage
1 large onion (chopped)
1 Tablespoon dried basil
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon chopped red pepper
1 Tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 cloves garlic (whole)
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
2-3 Tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

Quickly brown sausage and remove from pan and place in large saucepan. In same pan used to brown sausage, brown onion and garlic. Add whole tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, basil, sugar, red pepper, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powders. Simmer about 1/2 hour then pour into saucepan that has sausage in it. Fill each can of tomato paste twice with water and add to sauce. Simmer about 2 hours on low. Towards end of cooking add parmesan cheese.
